Natural Gas Software Selection: Experience is an Asset!

Natural Gas software selection is not an easy undertaking with numerous vendors positioning products and claiming capabilities critical to business operations. The challenge is that while prospective buyers know their businesses, they are not so experienced with the vendor landscape, making it hard to distinguish between truth and exaggeration. Earlier this month, I received the message below from a highly experienced nGenue user that speaks for itself. Hey Ken,

I’m sure you know I’ve been an nGenue customer since 2020. What you probably don’t know is that after 25 years working in the energy industry, I’m launching my own natural gas supply company in 2025.

When I filed with the PUC, I had to hit the radar of software vendors who contacted me to introduce their products. My initial reaction was “no thanks” because of the previous due diligence I did in 2020 when I choose nGenue, but the new business owner in me said I should take a look in case there’s something better or new I hadn’t seen yet.

I took calls with quite a few software providers, some of whom have prominent reputations, and some newer software solution companies. Most described their product as the best Billing & EDI system in the market with 100s or 1,000s of customers. While some of the software solutions were only power focused, others claimed to have significant natural gas expertise, but most of these products seemed very “power” terminology driven which gave me pause. To their credit, they each appeared to have a good handle on their slice of the spectrum it takes to operate an energy supply company (EDI & Billing).

However, I have yet to be presented with a software solution that provides a fraction of the capabilities of nGenue. I’ve been using nGenue across my operations for prospect management, pricing, billing, customer & deal/contract management, CIS, EDI, scheduling & ERTM. The remedy typically suggested to me by other software providers is to acquire two to four additional software products and integrate them to find a comparable solution. I found this very unattractive knowing what I know about the time/cost/risk/headaches of integrations, not to mention having to work with multiple user interfaces.

It may sound like I wasted my time, but I’ve got to say I feel better knowing I made the right decision 5 years ago and that nGenue is still the best and most cost-effective solution for my business in 2025. As a matter of fact, my experience with nGenue was a cornerstone of my decision-making process to take the leap of starting my new natural gas supply company.
